To the CREDIT of The Dead, they are continuing the experience for the younger Heads like me, and I give boundless thanks to the Core Four for resolving past differences and coming together.
Where else other than a Dead show can one experience absolute unity, peaceful humanity, and ecstasy with 30,000 + human beings???
The vibe in the audience was so chill. Everyone brought the Spirit with them to the show and I could feel Jerry's approval for such a peaceful gathering of the tribe. Might have been my friend, Ellis. D, but I thought I saw JG smiling down amidst the sunset tinged clouds during Eyes Of The World.
One more thing about Bobby's antics (messing with the lyrics and timing of songs, etc.)... whenever Bobby would yelp like a branded street dog or some other such silly shit, Jerry was always grinning widely. Can't take that crap too seriously... nobody's perfect... and for me, one who has no memories of shows with Jerry, the music was transcendent and took me, and everyone I chatted with the next day, to THAT PLACE.

Actually, my first victory! HA!
But who knows, if they had played Sugaree that night, my opinion might be different! They did play FOTD and Bobby couldn't get the cadence right on that one either... it wasn't a highlight because of the way the Dead played it, but because of the nostalgia factor... it took me back to all the times I've played that song with my buddies and I was on the brink of tearing up...
Oh gosh, I'm 22 and already go to shows for the nostalgia factor... daaaaang... :)

Hold on, hold on...can anyone negotiate a settlement hereabouts? Doesn't it require a PM or other elected or Royal Figurine (Dire? DB?)? Prince Albert in a can?
Before conceding the vitory, though I completely symp A size with your sentiment, ducats, I had to track down Bob and Sugaree...hmmm. Boy howdy--his upspeed approach to the monotonic speaking in a coma style just bugs the heck out of me. Is it pre-emptive to avoid being req'd to hit high notes? Is it motivated by some sense of a new age style? Why the combination of chipmunk-esque cadence with the talkie style anyhow?
I will say I liked the music as background...just very tough for me to take Bob the last 20 yrs or so, and I would very much say that what I see him doing today is the very logical continuation of the style he began adopting in the early 70s, and it just developed further over the years til we get this. Doesn't bother me at all that it's a Jerry tune--I just wish he would literally SING a song, or let someone else do it for crying outloud...

why!?! he doesn't have to...he has the masses eating it up...plus he is a rock star and he is experimenting with his genius...
funny, I spoke with him once and he seemed to be singing instead of talking...he was all excited, speaking of his youngest while trying to avoid a guy doing interviews for a documentary...the guy had snubbed bobby in favor of interviewing parish first and he was clearly upset and doing his best to give the guy the cold shoulder...it was something watching the little drama being played out in front of me...even after bobby relinquished he gave the guy hell by going through four or five directional changes regarding camera angle and whether he should be standing or sitting...
so possibly a couple of songs about his kids to "sing" would work or maybe he just sings when he pouts...
just give it another decade and it will be even funnier, or is that sadder...
but to those enjoying it: ENJOY!!!

True that--as to those enjoying it...so be it.
But, I have a hard time putting myself in their position, which I always thought was important (otherwise, I ask you--why bother?): in 1973 I could defend the DEAD to those that didn't see the light...but, in 2009, I have a harder time see the argument. Now, it's all taste, blah, blah, blah, but still...the defense isn't getting any easier.

Well...yeah, I agree...but, don't want to be too hard on the youngins seeing something of value here. What did you think of the musical approach, at least to that one song? Seemed okay, pleasant surprise almost while filtering out Bob's vocals. IMHO. Oh, and what is with the ultra intense expression he's sporting these days? At least Phil seems to be having fun...I know others have mentioned it, but jeeezzz, it's really looking a bit extreme.

i am hypothesizing that it is not enough bran in Bobby's diet. i know i have an intense expression several hours after eating some intensely hot mexican food followed by some ice cream. maybe he is experiencing something similar onstage??
just a thought.

Fits his age group too...might be on to something. Perhaps the back stage refreshments should now include Ensure and Metamucil...less of the 60s era stuff classically known to impact (!) regularity, like opiates.

Oh, I totally agree. My perception is that no one ever taught him how to scream properly - Bob's a throat sort of guy. All those years shouting with Pig at the end of NFA, Lovelight, Sugar Mags, probably wasted his cords. I bet he can't hardly carry a note from here to there anymore.

Yeah, my wife really dislikes the intense, EXTENDED screamfests at the end of some LLights...however, I will say that a properly placed yell, such as on the studio version of StSt, or JBGoode (like on the LastFillmore flick I was talking about yesterday) by Bob is spot on it seems to me...I was always troubled by my own inability to get out a good yell without having to think about it (seems the last thing you should be doing during a good time at a concert, right? but if I didn't, I would "break up" mid yell, and no one wanted to hear that...to sustain a consistent "tone" I really had to work at it, and if I just let it rip, half the time it would break to a high pitched or even inaudible squeak, interupting nearby bats and such flitting overhead...of course, I have NO singing ability whatsoever, so what do I know...but, I always figured I could talk my way thru a song too, though it would sound like Rod Serling).

Yeah - I'm the same. Maybe you sound like Rex Harrison. I remember hearing this once 'Them's that can't become critics. Sounds like a lot of us. :)

Doc Doolittle! Well, of course, I do little, and I like animals, but the tall hat ain't my style...I have immitated Rod though to the amusement of many friends over the years...he doesn't get much recognition nowadays though, so my audience is shrinking.
